Happy Weekend!
Stuck in the back seat en route to the cottage? On the bus home?
Here’s today buzz to read: the countdown for TIFF is on and I’m feeling the pulse, the world of boys has never been trickier, and an adorable short film for your Friday smile.
Heartthrob since his turn as Marius in the big screen adaption of Les Misérables, Eddie Redmayne is getting closer to Oscar, thanks to his upcoming turn and award friendly release date of The Theory of Everything. Playing Stephen Hawking in his youth as a Cambridge student and lover is generating the London born actor buzz in advance of this film’s premiere here at TIFF next month. Here’s a peek:
Also heating up the big screen is Chadwick Boseman, tasked unenviably with the role of James Brown in the bio-pic Get on Up. In the film, Boseman lip syncs to Brown’s original recordings and taps into plenty of choreography-no kidding-to recreate the “godfather of soul”.
Parent of a boy? Trying to understand your guy? This week’s long form read comes from the Walrus magazine in an essay called simply The Talk.
Young people always assume that their generation invented sex, but kids coming of age at this particular moment-even more so than the baby boomers, who grew up during the sexual revolution-really are charting an unmapped world. It’s not, as you might think, because they are having sex earlier (the average age most Canadians experience what academics merrily refer to as ” the sexual debut” has held steady at around sixteen). Rather, as the beneficiaries of feminism, gay liberation, and the digital revolution, they see romance, desire, gender roles, and family configurations expressed and celebrated in all sorts of unprecedented forms.
The piece explores various programmes attempting to reshape the dynamics of boy culture.
Teaching young men to trust, communicate, negotiate, and empathize does not undermine or threaten their manliness. It expands their humanity. It reclaims men’s possibilities.
