Ed Sheeran is getting set to release his new album X and the first single Sing might just sail us all into summer.
Oh, I know he has competition. Jezebel went bold and boy band fan crazy when they called “She looks so perfect” their choice for song of the summer. Australian band 5 Seconds to Summer released their striptease- focused video earlier in the frosty month of February. With spring fever stirring up a hot mess of hormones, the video might just as well have a giant arrow pointing to Summer. Right. Here.
Sheeran, however, doesn’t need underwear stunts to grab attention. This guy has depth and impressive connections-his first appearance on the Grammy Awards was a duet with Elton John, who runs Sheeran’s management company. Not bad. Just 23, the British singer’s new album began when he moved last summer to Venice, California where he was surrounded by heady distraction.
” I feel like everyone in L.A loves the kind of hype that comes around a new artist coming over, but I was taking everything with a pinch of salt.”
Hard to believe? Sheeran has boldly asserted he wants to release three albums in three years and few pull that off without ambition, smarts and a heap of talent. He’s got Pharrell along as a co-writer and co-producer on the first single and Justin Timberlake in his head as an inspiration for a career trajectory.
Last summer belonged to Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines. That was then. The 2014 season is just starting to heat up. Sheeran is a worthy contender. I like his morphing from mellow to funk but the real test is…
Can you dance to it?
He could always dig up some suspenders and some nifty red getaway boots like Canadian singer Kiesza and dance her way through Brooklyn.
Here’s to the summer beat. More contenders to come. Any favourites out there?
