Head to the movies while you wait for the real thaw

By April 12, 2013 Film, Performance

Woe is me. Where is April’s green?

The wind is howling or is that my inner voice pining for my bulbs to bud.

Must distract with cinema and a popcorn double bill.

Back in September 2012, I saw a bunch of films at the Toronto International Film Festival including The Sapphires and The Place Beyond the Pines.

You might recall reading about them here:

Now released in theatres, they are both worthy outings and will certainly wipe the ice pellets from your sluggish winter-isn’t-over-yet-you’re kidding-right? brains!

Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper are two reasons to see the The Place Beyond The Pines from director Derek Cianfrance but not the only ones. At the Tiff premiere, Cianfrance told audiences he was fascinated by biology and destiny. At the heart of this film is a question of legacy: what are the threads passed on between fathers and sons?

What follows is a cinematic triptych and a decent blue collar thriller, even if it is sprawling at times. Gosling is the story relay star here, passing on the baton to Cooper who then shares screen glory with two fine young talents, Emory Cohen and Dane DeHaan: both appear in the final act and tie up the loose ends.

Actor Dane DeHaan

I won’t give away the plot-the trailer here does all the work-but I recommend the film as an engrossing morality tale. Gosling is magnetic but after seeing his violent turn in Drive, I must admit I was ready this time for the former Mousketeer’s badass moves.

Part two of your double bill, The Sapphires, breezes in from Australia as their top grossing box office champ and winner of best film at their recent film industry awards ceremony. Based on a true story, the film tracks the story of an Aboriginal female singing group in 1960’s Australia who tour Vietnam. O’Dowd plays their manager and almost steals the show but for a killer soundtrack that will send you bouncing out of the theatre:popcorn perfect and good therapy while we wait for a real reason to sing with the spring robins.

Enjoy the weekend.
