Send me a real card

By December 2, 2012 Life

Are you sending me a Christmas card this year? Pretty please, make it a real one.

Digital cards are fine.

Thank you for thinking of me…you LAZY SOD!

I love the paper Christmas card and I save all of them. I know it took you time to pick one out at a card shop, scribble a message or maybe a whole letter and then send it off to me with a stamp. I love seeing your photos and getting any scraps of news.

I even love seeing your signature. Imagine. Real penmanship. It’s not dead. See The End of Pens, Slate magazine

To receive cards, it helps to send a few of your own.
Oops. We don’t always make it.

When the stars align, when I get them in the mail before the tulips emerge, I usually include a photo of our merry band on our best day of the year, sending warmth and wishes to you, our dearest. Best day of the year is really best photo we can find where all of us look decent, fully dressed, not entirely lopsided. Sentiments inside are easy: we like our friends very much. Hugs and sloppy kisses to all. Nothing lopsided about that.

But these are the days of digital cards and video messages of little elves with superimposed faces bobbing across your screen. These are best seen after enjoying a rum toddy. Or three. Find Best Toddy Recipe ever here

Before you can Scrooge me into a corner, I will confess to using one particular digital convenience for invitations. Paperless Post  allows me to send and track custom invitations by email. It was conceived in 2007 by siblings, Alexa and James Hirschfeld. The pair, both Harvard grads, spent two years chasing down funding to avoid having lives that were “awful and conventional”... not exactly lazy sod behaviour. A painful slog but they had two handy skills: resolve and ingenuity. To date, 60 million digital cards have been sent out via their website.  I use them often and get some glee knowing that beautiful design with my name on it took little work.

But what’s this? The clever duo has gone retro and introduced paper invitations, launched last month as a cousin to their successful business. Hear them explain why here

Yes, you heard right. Paperless Post is now wanting you to think once again about that tactile card that comes in the mail.  They might want to change their name but who’s quibbling? Goin’ old school is new again.  The cards are dazzling, intricate designs and I might be tempted this year.

Get going on your card. It’s only the 1st. You still have time. My mailbox is getting lonely.
