When we bought our home, we inherited a uniform, classic, and stiff navy front door. I like navy enough in nautical stripes, my husband’s crisp suits, and all that is prep—still, red rules.
This past spring, we painted the door after eight years of Bay Street blue. For colour fascists, our red is more of a raspberry blush, well within the rouge family. I arrived at the shade with the help of my painter and amateur shrink, George. This will allow my Irish ancestors to hover: a red door is said to ward off evil spirits. For everyone else, I hope it reads welcome. What does your front door say about you?
Spirits may be thwarted, but can we escape the Zombie Apocalypse coming to Toronto? Margaret Atwood has conjured up a dark tale in her latest fiction, an online collaboration with novelist Naomi Alderman. The Happy Zombie Sunrise Home is told serially, thirteen instalments in total, now online on the global story-sharing site Wattpad. Charles Dickens pioneered serial fiction. Skip a few centuries, and online collaborations have morphed the fictional serial into something Atwood fans worldwide can share instantly. Very cool, indeed. I don’t share the Zombie enthusiasm, but note there is no shortage of urban dwellers who do the gross get-up and stumble around the streets for annual Zombie walks.
Said to be impossible to film, David Mitchell’s award-winning book, Cloud Atlas is now a genre-busting epic on the big screen opening today. Six different narrative threads weave together over three hours, with cosmic questions throughout the film acting as glue. Expensive, ambitious movie-making. It will not work for everyone, but I was entranced when I saw it back at TIFF. Of course, some stories work better than others, but that is the result of tag-team filmmaking: the film lists three directors.
Sleepover alert: Tiff Bell Lightbox is holding The Bond Blitz in an all-night marathon at 7 pm tonight with From Russia with Love. James Bond’s design is also on view in the new exhibit Designing 007, which opens tomorrow. Popcorn here is the best in Toronto. You can bring any food inside the gorgeous, soundproof theatres. Forget zombie makeup. You’ll look like one yourself after sitting through a night of Bond flicks. Shaken, not stirred, baby.
