Two old pals sharing a coffee

By December 5, 2012 Performance

Michael Richards is getting another chance.

The actor, best known as Kramer on the hit TV series Seinfeld, will return to his first TV series in a decade in a new comedy starring Kristie Ally and Rhea Perlman called Giant Baby.

Richards enjoyed nine years as a fan favourite on Seinfeld. He then began appearing in comedy clubs until he was heckled one night in 2006 at an appearance in the famous LA club, The Laugh Factory.  Richards began a racist tirade against his heckler and caused a storm of disgust which ended his career…until now.

Earlier this fall, Kramer’s former colleague, Jerry Seinfeld invited him for a cup of coffee. This was filmed on Seinfeld’s new web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Seinfeld is, of course, the king of making a show that appears to be about nothing. The coffee dates are relaxed and unscripted, two buddies having a chat over a cuppa. But towards the end of the Richards  episode was a moment of real connection between the two comedians. I half expected an Oprah audience to appear suddenly and applause on cue. Instead, here was a lovely, poignant reflection about two friends, loyalty and second chances.

We should all be so lucky.

Grab a coffee and put your feet up. Here is the episode:
