I’m impatient at the best of times but, when considering safety, have learned not to take shortcuts.
With the swim and boating season inching closer, it’s a good idea to review the big rule, even if it means scaring myself silly.
A French company, specializing in safety gear and outdoor clothing, has released a disturbing drowning simulator meant to scare viewers into being safe.
Sortie en Mer (A Trip Out to Sea) is an interactive video offering a close look at what happens when boaters forget to wear life jackets. A man falls off a sailboat. Viewers are told to scroll up quickly to see his attempts to keep his head above water. Choose not to scroll and see the man drown, quickly.
For all those resisting the life jacket in your cherished circles, the fear factor after one viewing might induce a new safety habit.
But this is no friendly safety warning: the video terrified me.
Watch the short film here. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Did it convince you to wear one?
Maybe you’re now swearing off the ocean altogether.
Not me. Never.
It will be a while before I get there but I can’t wait for my big soak here.
There are few places I am happier. If there’s a body of open water, I like to be in it, or on it: whale watching, deep sea fishing-just a few of the joys of the Atlantic Coast.
But, I’ll be thinking twice next time I venture out on open water without some big orange thing around my neck.
