Two days remain until the first long weekend of the green season.
What are you going to do?
Get outside for a picnic? I’m with you. But author Jen Kirkman is clearly not on our team.
In an essay, charmingly titled Picnics Can Go FK Themselves, Kirkman suggests picnics are the springtime version of clichéd gestures, like buying someone a car for Christmas or getting engaged on Valentine’s Day.
Romance on a picnic is a myth.
Perhaps we have cinema to blame, and Julie Andrews, although there were no picnics included in the price of my Sound of Music tour last summer.
I think the author just needs a little imagination and a better view. Maybe forget the grass altogether.
Whatever your plans, Team Picnic Romance or not*, here’s to a lighter step on this, the first tease of summer.
Here’s some inspiration.
* What are your favourite picnic locations? I am always on the hunt and I’m not afraid of ants.
